"Oooo, Oooo, Oooo."
"Another one bites the dust"
"And another one down, and another one down, and another one bites the dust..."
"Ooo, she's gonna get you too. Another one bites the dust."
Yes, it's that time again. Kate Spencer a.k.a. Manhunter dispatches another villain, and this villain isn't a forgotten one like Monocle, whom Kate brutally yet elegantly slew in an earlier episode of the series. This newly minted corpse was a nasty, whacko villain that faced a number of heroes, including Batman. May he or she rot.
Apart from the quick and decisive fight that leads to the kill, Manhunter concludes the chapter with a duel that seems not to go so well for Kate, yet faithful readers of the Manhunter series will recall that techno-whiz Dylan refitted Kate's equipment. This refit precludes the cliffhanger. Therefore, creator of the Manhunter Marc Andreyko must have an ace up his sleeve. Andreyko's simply far too intelligent to forget his own continuity.
Given the abilities of the villain that Kate fights at the end of the book, the reader will likely have a pretty decent idea about what really went on in the cliffhanger, but we'll just have to wait until next issue to find out.
Before Pina, Blanco, Buccellato lovingly choreograph the lovely violence, Kate's time at the DEO is interrupted by a classic villain's ploy borne from a desperately needed bone-marrow transplant. The DA's office notes Kate's absence, but given her new status with the DEO, it's doubtful that they will prosecute her for the time lost. At the office, Kate's assistant Spencer gets a little more fleshed out when readers meet his boyfriend Todd. The small percentage of religious right advocates that can actually read should take note that Manhunter features a gay kiss.
Manhunter's a quick read. It's fun. It's open-minded. Kate kills another villain. The artwork's scrumptious, shadowy and oh-so crimson with memorable imagery. What's there not to love about Manhunter?
