I won a contest of sorts at www.SilverBulletComicBooks.com that got me an advanced copy of Digital Webbing’s upcoming graphic novel, NothingFace, in exchange for a review of it (good or bad, my choice, just my honest feelings). Yesterday I tore open the package when it arrived (from Northpole, Alaska… the places comics come from, huh), looked at the Ben Templesmith cover (based on a photo of himself of all things), and wondered if it’d be any good. I had never heard of the creators, never heard of the character or concept, I own only a couple of Digital Webbing Presents from the publisher, but felt obligated to give it a try because, hey, I’d won it in a contest.

And I’m glad I won, because I’d be kickin’ myself if I’d missed this gem!

NothingFace is the story of Jon Novak, a guy that can morph himself into whomever he comes into contact with. But there are three catches: One, it hurts him (and these two creators go out of their way to play that part of his powers way up), two, he may absorb more then just the appearance of his template (or person he’s taking the form of) through the transformation (I mean, sometimes it’s their memories or experiences along with their mug), and three… if he isn’t morphed into someone then he looks like a jack-o-lantern… that-that-that’d ruin my day. Period.

But Jon isn’t a sad sack about his life, instead he tries to make a buck off of it by running Novak Solutions, a company that solves impossible problems by… well, just trust him, he solves’em. Basically Jon will do whatever it takes.

Now, with the groundwork laid, this graphic novel gets cooking! It starts off as the old cliché of the beautiful broad coming to the grizzled detective to stop a heinous crime, but it is told with such panache that NothingFace really takes this overused concept and breathes new life into! The beautiful broad is a precognizant who has dreamed of a murder… three, actually – the third one being herself, all at the hands of the same madman. That’s second thirty of the plot and anymore then that and I’m givin’ away too much! From there it gets good, good, good!

NothingFace is a quality suspense thriller with a cinematic noir to it! This truly reads like a well thought out movie on paper. And a large part of that is Yildiray Cinar. His art has a dramatic flair to it that lends a LOT to this tale. He can do the acting, the quiet moments, and action with equal pizzazz. His art really animates the story that Kel Nuttall put to paper. They make a quality team!

If you want an edge of your chair nail biter, NothingFace is waiting for you!
