Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar
Artist: Adam Kubert
Publisher: Marvel
It was brave enough of Millar to kick off the ULTIMATES with a whole issue of World War II prologue (which I know lost him some of the less... patient of readers initially), but here Bendis and Millar have gone a step braver with nary a punch being pulled. Instead we witness baby Reed Richards, his curiosity on fire from the get-go, then pre-teen Richards making liberal use of the household appliances to cobble together... something or other.
Young Johnny, Sue and Ben appear in various guises and I think from the punchline that we can assume there'll be no rockets involved in their impending transformations. So a round of applause once more for giving the series a bit of depth and background, for the banter which you know will be sharp from these two writers, and for Kubert who makes it all slick.
Can't say it thrilled me, but neither has the original outside of Grant Morrison's contribution, and I don't suppose for one second that I'm their prime target audience.
