“Echo, part one”
Writer/Artist: David Mack
Publisher: Marvel Knights
This was my first real exposure to anything by Mack, and I’ll be damned if it isn’t just spectacular. It has become a true rarity these days to find a piece of artwork like this, that breaks away from the traditional comic page format and yet is still understandable and easy to follow. The painted pages are gorgeous, harkening back to classic Seinkewicz and McKean with touches of Muth and Williams thrown in for good measure (and that’s not to mention the classical painters whose influences are brought into the mix in the final pages).
The shifts in style wonderfully complement the narrative that flows in and amongst the images, all serving to introduce the reader to the character of Echo. I know nothing about this character, so this was a fascinating introduction. If the reader already knows who this woman is and what her relationship with DD is, then this issue might be more of a filler-issue for you, but even if as filler, this is top-notch stuff. It’s really making me want to track down some Kabuki trades and give that a shot, too.
Final Word:
Beautiful. That about says it all. This is without question the most impressive piece of work out this week.
