Devil Child Revisited

By Glenn Carter
Print This Item

In the next few columns I want to revisit the newest issues of indy titles that have already been mentioned previously here. Why? Why not? They are prime examples of indy comic making at their best.

Plus, they keep sending me comics and I’ve got to do something with them.

Devil Child Book 3: Heaven’s Prisoners

Writer: Andy Winter
Artists: Duane Leslie, Keith Burns, Jason Dennis
Publisher: Moonface Press
Relevant other info: www.devil-child.co.uk

Back with a third book which debuted at this years Bristol Comics Expo to considerable interest is Devilchild from Andy Winter.

For those who aren’t aware, Devilchild is the story of the son of Satan, who has spent most of his life blissfully unaware of his heritage, instead working as a waiter. Unbeknownst to him his closest friends are guardian angels sent by the heaven in order to protect him from his own secret heritage.

Over the short time it has been going, Devilchild has acquired a reputation for being witty, none too subtle, irreverent, challenging and, in places, funny as fuck.

The third book in the series carries on this tradition and continues the storyline from where 2 left off and unlike in the previous 2 books, the third book is comprised entirely of Devilchild storyline, which helps to move the book away from anthology territory into and realms of standing proud on its own. It’s a good move, people reading the books at this stage will be wanting to see the main feature, not wasting time on peripheral stories, however good they are.

In the third book, there is a real drive to push the story forward and some of the humour, but by no means all, has had to be sacrificed to drive the plot onwards. This is an understandable move and the plot is good and engrossing enough to keep you going. There is still plenty of wit in these pages, particularly from the lips of the foul-mouthed Satan.

In this book Troy’s friends, Beatrice and Lucia (the warrior angels) have been hauled up into Heaven to stand trial for their attack on Hell in the last book. Troy goes into Hell to enlist the help of his father. An obvious confrontation is inevitable as Satan comes back into Heaven.

Now, if all I just wrote gets you starting the bonfires and penning a letter to the daily mail, I’m warning you now that the basic plot, I’ve just mentioned is the mere tip of the iceberg. To get anything at all out of reading Devilchild, you need to leave your religious convictions at the door.

Anyway, to buy copies for a burning or reading (depending on your personal religious position) you need to go to the website shown above (www.devil-child.co.uk) or amazon.co.uk where they will happily sell you copies of all 3 books for either purpose.
