Writer Grant, Retailer Root Seek Support

Posted: Saturday, November 22
By: Tim O'Shea

Thanks to comics blogger Neilalien for linking to Alan David Doane's note in order to make folks aware of Steven Grant's request for temporary fiscal support from his readership as well as Comic Relief's Rory Root's declaration (via The Comics Journal's message board) of November 19-26 as COMIC RELIEF APPRECIATION WEEK (Comic Relief is a comic book store in Berkeley, California).

First off, here's Grant's details:
"...If you haven't read it, I write a weekly column, PERMANENT DAMAGE. I'm a freelance writer who mostly writes comic books, and in the column I discuss (the creative, business and cultural aspects of) comics, media, politics and whatever other facets of modern life are on my mind in any given week.

The problem with being a freelancer is that you hit these moments where finances go extremely bad. For the past couple of years I've been working mostly on original creations, all of which have stalled for one reason or another (most of them completely out of my control), which has left me very short of cash. If anyone who enjoys the column or my comics work would care to make a donation, I'd really appreciate it. I hate to ask, but it's one of those situations where the options are narrow.

If you would like to donate, please send whatever amount you're comfortable with to:

Steven Grant
2657 Windmill Pkwy #194
Henderson NV 89074-3844

Please enclose your e-mail address, and make sure you include a mailing address so I can repay you when the money starts to flow again. Thanks very much. Someone has suggested I get a PayPal account for this sort of thing, so if you're more comfortable with something like that, check back in a few days."

Now on to Rory Root's message:

COMIC RELIEF ASKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Comic Relief needs your help. I hope at this time that you are able to further support a treasured community resource; the independent bookstore. Please when picking up your comics or GNs today, consider an additional purchase.

An extra Graphic Novel a week is all we ask.

I believe Comic Relief offers the largest and most diverse selection of comics and graphic novels in the US. Not only do we carry comics and GNs, but our selection of self-published ‘zines, Manga, Anime DVDs, Fringe Culture books, and Art books show our desire to promote the graphic medium in all its forms. Unfortunately, carrying such a massive inventory has a large cost associated with it. My optimism and zeal to offer such a selection has caused a bit of a cash crunch.

What we would like is for you to buy an extra comic or GN today that you were going to buy tomorrow. Pick up those Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanza, or Solstice gifts today; avoid the rush! Also, as a thank you, every $100 purchase will be accompanied by your choice of a free tee-shirt, 30% off any statue or toy set, or 20% off DVDs! No, we are not going away, but we could use your help now. We’ve taken steps to correct our inventory excesses, and we’ll still have the books you want when you want them. Remember, we always special order as needed.

I and the staff at Comic Relief would like to thank you again for your continued support.

My Sincerest regards,
Rory D. Root
