SPX and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund are proud to release this sneak peek at the cover of this year s SPX Anthology, drawn by master cartoonist Jaime Hernandez. The cover kicks off the book s focus on travel comics, and features the character Maggie from the celebrated series Love & Rockets!

Every year the SPX Anthology assembles a broad variety of the best established and up and coming names in the comics world. This year s anthology is a focus on travel a look at the exotic locales and everyday mishaps that make traveling an enlightening, frustrating, and transformational experience.

Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez s Love & Rockets is the alternative comics success story of the 80 s, 90 s, and 00 s. If the publication of Zap #1 in 1967 officially marks the beginning of underground comix, the publication of Love & Rockets #1 in 1982 could be said to officially mark the beginning of the 80 s comics renaissance clumsily called alternative comics.

Submissions are still being accepted for this year s SPX anthology. All cartoonists are welcome to submit stories to the book, whose guidelines are up at http://www.spxpo.com/anthology.htm The final deadline for submissions is April 25th.

In its ninth year SPX serves as the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books and the discovery of new creative talent. This year s event begins on Friday September 5 and runs until Sunday September 7. SPX is held in downtown Bethesda, MD, just one mile outside the nation's capital, Washington DC.

As with every year all profits from SPX and the SPX anthology will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, protecting the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. In 2002, SPX was able to help the CBLDF raise over $13,000.
