WLG #228: Old School Goodness!
Another light week, so we’re going to skip past all of that jibber-jabber and jump directly into What Looks Good…
STORMWATCH: PHD #14 $2.99 (Ian Edginton / Leandro Fernandez)Ah, yes, this is the StormWatch that I grew up with and love. Sure, part of me asks “if this books failed before using this format what makes WildStorm think that it won’t fail again?” but then quickly the part of me that loves everything that has to do with StormWatch smacks that other part and tells it to shut up and shut up NOW.
This is what the StormWatch team is best yet, dealing with major word powers and disasters. Of course, the world is seriously messed up right now, but still there is a team of superheroes that are there to help in this time of need.
Questions: what has become of Battalion that he appears to have aged so much? I realize that I didn’t follow the “Mark of the Beast” event but I was reading StormWatch: PHD religiously, and I don’t remember him growing a beard like that during the course of the series. What did I miss?
Also, seeing as this book has gone back to its roots and we’ve already seen Flint within the pages, could it be that some members from the “Team Achilles” days could make an appearance? Sure, I’d love to see Santini (who has been a part of the WildStorm Universe for quite some time), but seeing as we’ve already seen Flint, if there was ONE person that I really wanted to see from the “Achilles” days that would be Jukko.
I am not saying that will happen, I don’t even know if we’ll see any of the “Achilles” team, but if I could, that would be who I would want to see.
UNCANNY X-MEN #502 $2.99 (Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction / Greg Land)When I got to the end of the last issue all that I could think was “is that a Reaver?”
Actually, I think I am wrong. If I remember my X-Men lore the guys wearing the masks were actually the guards of the original Hellfire Club, and I believe that they were under the control of Donald Pierce. During a fight with Wolverine three of those guards were mortally injured. As such, Pierce went ahead and augmented the men with cybernetic implants. Later others joined the group and Pierce was the head of them, himself also cybnetically enhanced. It was only has Cyborgs that the group became to be known as Reavers, but I am no (uhhh) X-pert on the subject, so like I said, I could be wrong.
However, I believe that all of those Reavers are dead and haven’t been seen in some time.
So, really, these guys couldn’t be Reavers. As far as we know they’re just guys in white masks, but my mind DID go there and I got all excited like I was a kid.
Now that I look back on things I’m pretty sure that the guys that we saw last issue (and on the cover of this issue) are not Reavers, but I think the more important thing here is that I found myself getting pretty geeked over an X-Men book, which other than Astonishing… I don’t think that has happened in a while.
I know we’re only three issue in, but so far I like where this creative team is going with the group and I am eager to see some more.
Good stuff!
