Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2008

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Pick of the Week – Y: The Last Man #59; Welcome to What Looks Good! So, I sat down at my computer to begin banging away at this week's column. I checked out the shipping list and of all the books coming out this week only TWO really got me sufficiently geeked. As such, I'm not going to try force unnecessary words.

I'll just pop this in here:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset....and once again we're going to just jump into the thick of things.

I will ask this, though: being that my stack is so small this week this makes for an excellent time to check out something that I might not currently be reading. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd love to hear them.

More on that on the boards. For now, let's take a look-see and What Looks Good...

DC

Y: THE LAST MAN #59 (MR) $2.99 (Brian K. Vaughan / Pia Guerra)

- MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT CONCERNING THE EVENTS OF THE PREVIOUS ISSUE -

Highlight to read:

I can't believe that Vaughan and Guerra had the stones, the STONES, to kill off Agent 355 two issues before the last.

WOW!

I mean, I have come to expect HUGE surprises from this title, that is one of the reasons why I love the book so much, but to have a sniper put a bullet right through the center of her forehead?

WHAT.

THE.

HECK?!?!?

Of course, Vaughan has left me going mad as I REALLY want to know what her real name is, the one that she whispered to Yorick right before she died.

And what's this?!?!?!? Yorick is in LOVE with 355?

I guess it makes sense. It's been five years, and though it would have been extremely noble, no matter how unlikely, for Yorick to remain chaste for his one and only Beth it has been shown already that Yorick is just a man. There's been a few women along the way, so is it really so surprising that this whole time he was in love with 355.

Could it be that is in love with BOTH 355 and Beth?

Who knows!

But seriously, they killed 355!

Gasp!

True enough, this book has been one heck of a roller coaster ride from the get-go, and I'm sure there's plenty more to see as this title winds down.

AMAZING stuff here. INSTANT CLASSIC.

DC

ASTONISHING X-MEN #23 $2.99

Joss Whedon and John Cassaday wrapping up their 24 issue, two-arc epic as a handful of X-Men take on a technologically advanced army on some distant planet...

What more do you need?

You've got Whedon's spot-on writing and Cassaday's luscious pencils, coupled with an excellently rough and rowdy Wolverine and a Cyclops with more character than we've seen in some time.

This is how the X-Men SHOULD be.

Well done guys, well done.

Like I said, it's a light week this week, so I'd like to hear what you're geeked about as well as your suggestions as to what other books I should be reading right now. Just hit the What Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spout off.

Thanks!

Until then,

Peace!

-Diaz
