Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2008

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Pick of the Week – Runaways #25 ; Welcome to What Looks Good!OK, it's been a few weeks since a PROPER column and I was all excited to be able to sit down and write something up for this week. I've been catching up on my comics and really enjoying them as of late, especially books like Birds of Prey (big surprise, I know), Justice League of America, and Dynamo 5, and that's just to name a few.

But when I saw down to spew forth about comics this week I found TWO that I got geeked about.

TWO!

So, not so much rambling from me, so instead I'm just going to get right to it and start with this:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset.I think what I will do is take the opportunity to ask you readers out there what has been getting you especially excited over the past few weeks. I know I'm missing SOMETHING out there if only two books are really doing it for me this week, so if you've got something, please let me know.

Also, is anyone enjoying any of the X-Men titles right now? I ask, not because I don't like them, but honestly, I somehow got MONTHS behind and I have NO idea what is going on right now.

If you have some light to shed on ANY good comics I would love to hear it.

So, with that let's take a look at What Looks Good...

BOOM! STUDIOS

PLANETARY BRIGADE ORIGINS #3 (OF 3) $3.99 (Keith Giffen & J.M DeMatteis / Various Artists)

OK, for one of the smaller publishes on the block let's just say it already: Boom! Studios is rocking the house. They're putting out some QUALITY books, and this, my friends, is one of my favorites.

Why?

Well, the characters are full of neurosis and the want to save the world, yet they can't seem to stop from fighting amongst themselves.

I mean, come on, it's Giffen/DeMatties doing humor comics, something that most everyone can appreciate.

MARVEL

POWERS #24 (MR) $2.95 (Brian Michael Bendis / Michael Avon Oeming)

I love this book as it is, there's no questioning that, but when I read the blurb that say that Detective Walker is taking on Satan in this issue, well, come on, how could I NOT be all over that?

Powers has definitely pushed the envelope in the past, no question (can you say “monkey rape”?) and this just pushes things again.

Excellent.

SHORT week for me this week people, which like I said above, must mean that I am missing SOMETHING. Help me and give me your favorite geek-love books.

Was there something that did it for you this week? If so, stop by the What Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spread the love, my friend.

Until then,

Peace!

-Diaz
