Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2008

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Pick of the Week – The Eternals #6; Welcome to What Looks Good! It's kind of a short week this week, both comics that I am super-geeked about as well as the amount of free time that I have this week (thought gobs of overtime at work will look very nice in my bank account). So, we're going to jump right into the comics this week, but first, as always is this:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset. And now, let's see What Looks Good...

NOBLE CAUSES #26 $3.50 (Jay Faerber / Tim Kane)

I don't know how it happened but somehow I got behind on this book; thankfully, this is standalone issue with a guest artist, an excellent place for me to once again acquaint myself with the royalty of superheroes: the Noble family.

This is straightforward, old-school comic book fun and is worth every penny. I know that the $3.50 price tag is giving you pause, but seriously, this is one of my favorite books out there right now and it is worth the extra coin to make sure that this title stays alive.

Anyone else out there read this book?

MARVEL

ETERNALS #6 (OF 7) $3.99 (Neil Gaiman / John Romita Jr.)

I like this book.

A lot.

Why?

Someone asked me that on the message boards and I never really could give a proper response. I think the best that I can do is that this book has an epic and monumental feel to it, one that is almost palpable. It's the feel that I think that Civil War is going for, but is missing the mark, whereas this title is making it look easy.

Simply put, Gaiman and Romita have made me care about characters that I've never liked before; I had NO interest in the Eternals before this book and would probably never have thought to check them out. If the creative team's goal was to introduce these characters and concepts to a new generation then they've definitely hit their mark.

Excellent.

MOON KNIGHT #7 $2.99 (Charlie Huston / David Finch)

Though I enjoyed the first arc I am happy to say that I am glad that Moon Knight's reintroduction to the Marvel Universe has happened and now we can see him jump right into the fray in the midst of “Civil War.” This is the issue that launches him back into the Marvel Universe at large and I couldn't be happier, thus the geek-love that I am feeling.

PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #3 $2.99 (Matt Fraction / Ariel Olivetti)

At first I was wary of seeing the Punisher back in the Marvel Universe proper as I felt that Ennis and company were doing a PERFECT job with him over in the MAX line, but I have to hand it to Fraction and Olivetti for bringing back Frank into the world of heroes nicely.

The “fight” between Cap and the Punisher was over far too quickly within the pages of Civil War, so maybe, if the cover is any indication, we'll get to see a bit more of that fight (because, in my opinion, the Punisher could beat Cap in a fight; but that's just me).

Good stuff!

WOLVERINE #50 $3.99 (Jeph Loeb / Simone Bianchi)

The final answer to how Wolverine and Sabretooth are connected?

Fandom has been waiting a long time for this so of COURSE I'm salivating over this book this week. That beautiful cover by Bianchi certainly doesn't hurt either.

Was there something that did it for you this week? If so, stop by the What Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spread the love, my friend.

Until then,

Peace!

-Diaz
