Who's who in the Comics Bulletin Universe - Update 2008

Who is... Michael A. Diaz?

Michael Diaz lives in Michigan, but don't hold that against him.

There he works as a Sys. Admin. while fostering dreams of one day becoming a "real" writer.

Most importantly, Michael is seriously addicted to comics, something that his wonderful wife tolerates with the patience of a saint.

He also writes this weekly column that people occasionally read.

"[O]ne of the most positive and entertaining columns going."
- Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Villains United)

Pick of the Week – Y: The Last Man #52; Welcome to What Looks Good!I am SO behind in my Christmas shopping it isn't even funny; desperation is setting in as I consider gift cards to gas stations. Then again, with gas prices spiking this week maybe such wouldn't be such a bad idea.

No, can't do it.

Anyhow, this week is going to be short and sweet as I need to get back out to the mall so that I can buy the stuff I should have bought WEEKS ago.

Urgh!

First this:

Standard Disclaimer: For those of you new to the WLG experience, here's how it works: Every week I check out the release schedule from the Diamond Comics Shipping List and decide which comics that I am going to spend my hard-earned money on. Yep, my money. That's good, because it helps to maintain my objectivity. If I spend money on a comic book and it turns out to be crap I'm going to be upset. Also, I wanted to say that most likely I will be taking a short break from WLG during the holiday season. Christmas, as you may well know, is on a Monday as is New Year's Day. That kind of throws me off a bit and my free time has been seriously strained by my job as of late; also, without giving too much away let's just say I spent a sizable amount of money on a shiny piece of stone, so something tells me I'm going to be busy with familial obligations for most of the holiday, more so than usual.

Anyway, here's a quick rundown of what gets me geeked this week; that's right, it's What Looks Good...

DC

Y THE LAST MAN #52 (MR) $2.99 (Brian K. Vaughan / Pia Guerra)

This book is winding toward it's final conclusion (only eight issues away!) and still the surprises keep coming, left and right. For almost 50 issues now we “knew” that Yorick was the world's last living human male, but past issues have put that into doubt. And now, when it seems like we should be seeing Yorick getting closer to finding his lost love another twist is thrown in for good measure.

I won't give away the twist, but let's just say at the end of the issue I got to the last page and said “What the heck?!?!”

I wish that this book didn't have to go but I am enjoying myself too much seeing how everything falls into the place.

Why do I get the feeling that there won't be a happy ending?

MARVEL

NEW AVENGERS: ILLUMINATI #1 $2.99 (Brian Michael Bendis / Jim Cheung)

I didn't buy the one-shot that came out prior to the launch of the entire “Civil War” event so I really had no interest in picking this up either. In fact, as I was going through the books that were coming out this week I passed this one up; then, right before publishing this column I saw that the artwork for the entire series was going to be done by Jim Cheung. It's no secret that I've been drooling over his pencils since his stint on CrossGen's Scion, so of course I'm going to be picking this book up.

PUNISHER #42 (MR) $2.99 (Garth Ennis / Leandro Fernandez)

The Punisher in Afghanistan taking on rogue elements of the Russian army; just another reason why I love what Ennis has done with this book and this character, polished off nicely by the more than able Leandro Fernandez.

Did I mention that Ennis is NEVER allowed to leave this title?

Because I have that kind of power...

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #103 $2.99 (Brian Michael Bendis / Mark Bagley)

As always I've been enjoying Ultimate Spider-Man but this take on the “Clone Saga” has upped my level of enjoyment up a notch or two. Is Gwen really back for good or not? What will happen to all of these poor clones of Peter Parker? I'm thinking some will stick around, but some seem destined for death.

Leave it to Bendis and Bagley to give us fresh and interestingly new takes on the Scorpion, Spider-Woman, Carnage and what we think we know about Peter and MJ's relationship.

Great fun as always!

Was there something that did it for you this week? If so, stop by the What Looks Good message boards (see link below) and spread the love, my friend.

Have a nice holiday season and I will see you next year!

Until then,

Peace!

-Diaz
