Just My Opinion, But…

I think Marvel and DC should look into doing what the TV networks are trying with their serial type programs. Run your serialized “big events” in one big lump then give yourself and us as a readers a break by running a load of stand alone stories that dig deeper into the characters more so than the flash and explosions of constant impending doom and threats the big events seem to churn out.

Shouldn’t Rick Remender and Tony Moore’s Fear Agent be selling a lot more than it does? This is a very fine retro/modern action/adventure book that hits on all cylinders. Shouldn’t the publisher push this book a little harder? Shouldn’t there be more talk about it on the so-called popular message boards? Dark Horse Comics has Fear Agent Volume 1 Re-Ignition coming out in trade paperback in April. It collects Fear Agent #1 through #4. More folks should really check this out.

Do we really need so many Batman and Superman related comics?

Aren’t Mark Brooks (Ultimate Fantastic Four), Ron Frenz (Amazing Spider-Girl), Steve Epting (Captain America), Aaron Lopresti (Incredible Hulk), Scot Eaton (New Excalibur), Keith Champagne (Nightwing, Green Lantern Corps), Ethan Van Sciver (Green Lantern), and Eduardo Barreto (Cobb: Off The Leash) some of the most under rated artists in mainstream comics?

Why are most all of the Top Cow comic books unreadable?

It looks to me that Cover Girl from Boom Studios should be 32 pages of really fun story and great art. It comes out in April from Andrew Cosby (Sci-Fi Channel’s Eureka) and Kevin Church. The blurb says “He’s a movie star action hero more concerned about his haircut than throwing a punch. When he gets a death threat, he needs a bodyguard—What he gets is a gorgeous woman in five inch heels who has no problem getting her hands dirty.” This sounds like the kinda comic book we need more of. It’s called fun, humor and action… are ya listening Marvel and DC?

Shouldn’t my buddy, artist Michael Turner start feeding the female characters he draws.

Shouldn’t DC Comics do Showcase Presents trade paperbacks of: Star Spangled War Stories, The Brave and The Bold, Showcase, Tarzan by Joe Kubert, and a collection of their western comics from the 50s, 60s and 70s?

Shouldn’t Marvel Comics do Essentials trade paperbacks on Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, Sub-Mariner by Bill Everett, all of the great war stories from the 50s, a compilation of Ka-Zar stories making sure that the very best ones like Bruce Jones run with Ron Frenz and Armando Gil are in em’, and while I’m at it, how about Captain Savage and His Leatherneck Raiders?

Am I the only one with a storage building full of unreadable, worthless Image Comics from the 1990s? Good thing I didn’t work for Valiant Comics… they were even worse.

I can hardly wait to see what Ed McGuinness artwork looks like on Marvel Comic book characters. I’d love to see what he could do with The Hulk and The Juggernaut.

I think the JSA book(s) are gonna be the best mainstream DC Comics in 2007.

I also think the JSA and JLA Classified books need some serious rethinking. These stories have gotten very complacent and uninteresting.

Is there anyway Marvel Comics can wipe the Spider-Man continuity clean and start all over going back to the Lee/Ditko/Romita days? What’s next… having Peter Parker make a deal with the devil to save Aunt May, Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy (Part Three) with the end result of driving them all from his life? Hasn’t anyone heard of divorce? Trust me, if they are looking to add drama divorce will do it. You don’t have to bring in a galactic or underworld threat to try and match it. Do I smell Mephisto here?

Has DC Comics ever thought about getting all the Batman related characters in one room together at the same time to see what the dynamics would be like? Robin, Nightwing, Barbara Gordon, Alfred, and the list goes on and on…

Why isn’t Darryl Banks drawing a monthly comic?

I’d love to see John Romita Sr. do a Spider-Man or Daredevil mini-series.

Wouldn’t really like to know how creative teams are really hired, what pitches are really read and what publishers really think about their consumers? Trust me, no you don’t. You’d just be very disappointed and hurt.

I’m here to change that. A tip of the hat goes to Billy Tucci for demanding that I spotlight Katherine here at Busted Knuckles. I’m really thankful I’ve got guys like Billy out there as talent scouts for the Busted Knuckles Babe Of The Week. Now if Frank Cho would get off his lazy ass and send in his choices we’d all be better off and more educated.

Let’s be honest, do I really need to say more? Thrilling Adventures Stories was a wonderful comic book magazine anthology that ran in the 70s. It was some of the most incredible stories and art you would ever wanna find. The best part is all the stuff not only stands up today, but it’s much better than most of what you are served from the major publishers on a weekly basis.

You should really hunt these back issues down if you can. Aspiring writers and artists can learn so very much from these stories. Publishers too.

The Roundup

Another week rolls by and that leaves you with only around 11 shopping days until MY birthday (Dec.17th) and 20 until Christmas. I suggest you get out there and get working on this. They don’t call this the holiday season for nothing.

While you’re at it I should remind you that in the latest issue of Diamond Previews you will find the solicitation for The Cobb Magazine from IDW Publishing. This collects the entire Cobb: Off The Leash mini-series plus loads of extra stuff. Make sure you tell your local retailer or comic book outlet that you want them to not only order this for you ,but for everybody else on the planet. Beau Smith needs to pay his bills and you need a large amount of testosterone in your system.
