WHAT’S THE FUTURE?
WHAT’S THE FUTURE?
This week was a busier than usual week. Actually, they all seem busier lately. One day in particular had yours truly at Archie Comics HQ about 6 a.m. and not home until after 10 p.m. The day started early in the Manhattan offices of Random House for a discussion panel on the future of the Graphic Novel. Despite the incredible amount of people in the audience, a sold out event, it was hard to not notice the large amount of different faces.
The majority of the audience was not the comic book publishers, but the traditional book publishers. It might have been because of the location. DC, Marvel and Archie were in the audience, but most other comic publishers are not in the NY Area. Book publishers are.
The one topic that was certainly touched on was how nothing has changed the way book stores have laid out their store plans stronger than the graphic novel. A lot of our industries newfound success comes squarely from the tremendous impact of Manga. Additionally how much of that impact came from female readers.
All the speakers did a very good job, and Bill Schanes of Diamond really pushed how invaluable the direct market store retailer has been in expanding the reach of comics with their infinite knowledge of product. The advent of the new scanning system, similar to a grocery store scanning system, should help comic shops compete even stronger.
Here is all the basic info on the panel.
Publishers Weekly presents the second breakfast panel in our discussion series:
COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS
HARNESSING THE POWER OF VISUAL LITERATURE
Sponsored by Ney York |Comic Con and |Random House
As the web, mobile content, social networking and video games become the language of youth culture, many feel that graphic novels will become an even more important tool for literacy and education. Our panel of graphic novel publishers, editors and distributors will explore the growing impact of comics and graphic novels on the book market and will discuss the latest domestic and international trends in comics publishing.
• What is manga mania and how has it changed the U.S. market?
• Will sales continue to grow and where?
• How can publishers maximize sales through bookstores and through the comics shop market?
• How will the growing interest in comics as an educational tool affect schools and libraries?
Surveying the new publishing landscape, this panel will explore how comics publishing is moving beyond its traditional roots and finding new readers. Whether you are a publisher, librarian, educator, or affiliated with the traditional bookstore market or the comics shop market, this discussion will provide insight in this fast-growing and swiftly changing market.
